Young swimmers build strength, speed and endurance while refining their stroke technique in our pathway and swim team programs. Get ready for swim team, or join today and start competing at meets throughout the city! Competitive Skills and Drills Age: 8-17 years Class length: 45 minutes Qualification: Student must be able to demonstrate all Stage 6 skills as follows: ○ Swim the front crawl for 50 yards and do a flip turn ○ Breaststroke for 50 yards and do an open turn ○ Butterfly for 25 yards ○ Back crawl for 25 yards and do a flip turn ○ Sidestroke or elementary backstroke for 50 yards ○ Dive from a standing position ○ Swim any combination of strokes for 150 yards Skills Practiced: ○ Swim any combination of strokes for more than 150 yards ○ Refining technique for all strokes ○ Water polo ○ Starts and flip turns ○ Dives Swimmers build strength and endurance while refining technique and getting ready for competitive swim team. We work on self-confidence, goal setting, and team building during aquatic activities such as conditional swimming and water polo. Register Pre-Swim Team Age: 6-18 years Class length: 60 minutes, 2x per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays Qualification: Completing Competitive Skills and Drills is a recommended pre-requisite. Skills Practiced: ○ Swim any combination of strokes for more than 150 yards ○ Refining technique for all strokes ○ Competitive starts, dives and flip turns This group workout incorporates higher intensity and longer distances as swimmers work toward swim team, without the pressure of races and swim meets. Class includes endurance, drills, turns, technique, relay and race practices. Register Piranhas Swim Team Age: 6-18 years Class length: 2 hours, 3 times per week. Season: September-June Qualification: Complete a try-out with the aquatics team. Skills Practiced: ○ Swim conditioning ○ Refining technique for all strokes ○ Competitive starts, dives and flip turns ○ Racing technique The Piranhas swim team is a competitive, age group team. Led by Head Coach Hugo Salhuana, the Piranhas practice three times a week, have dry lands twice a week and compete at clubs and invitationals. The Piranhas have attended the NY State YMCA Championships every year since 1999 and YMCA Nationals three times.
