The YMCA of Greater New York is seeking an Aquatics Facilitator responsible for maintaining safe conditions in and around the swim area at YMCA pools. The Aquatics Facilitator will promote a safe and positive atmosphere in accordance with YMCA aquatics policies and procedures.  Will provide instruction based on the YUSA Lifeguard Instructor / Swim Lesson Trainer national curriculum, uphold the standards required for YLG/ YSLv6 certification, and will motivate his/her participants.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Must be Instructor Ready: Identifiable in the classroom (business casual) and at the pool (swimsuit, swim cap Instructor shirt), use & teach YLG-I /YSL-T program materials, maintain records (attendance, track progress, and other required by YLG/YSLv6).
  • Instruct participants according to YMCA Lifeguard Instructor Curriculum/ Y Swim Lesson v6 Trainer curriculum aquatics program standards: using course required manuals, materials for YLG-rescue equipment, manikins, AED + Oxygen trainers, for YSL-lesson guides, Skills & topic library, instructional devices, and model guided discovery teaching, and for both - effective class organization and positive relationship with participants.
  • Ensure course materials and instructional equipment remains in good condition; have all equipment ready prior to classes, disinfect as required-if needed, and put away after.
  • Attend mandatory in-service training quarterly
  • Must have the YMCA LG & YMCA LG-I certifications and/ or YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor v6 and YMCA Swim Lesson Trainer v6 certifications.
  • Know and understand the Emergency Action Plan and Emergency Evacuation Routes.
  • Enforce aquatics safety rules consistently and fairly.
  • Maintain positive relationships with class participants, parents, non-class members and staff.  Show members and colleagues respect by listening carefully and showing empathy when dealing with a difficult situation.
  • Promote other aquatics programs and have knowledge of pool schedule and programs.
  • Must follow the directions of the YMCA aquatic supervisors in accordance with YMCA aquatic standards.
  • Follow and maintain sanitary habits in accordance with CDC guidelines.
  • Other activities and duties as needed that address the ongoing health and well-being of our staff and members.

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be 18 years old.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard Instructor and/or Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Trainer certification (base level certs required to maintain instructor/trainer certs).
  • Current BLS and First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.
  • Demonstrate LG rescues, swim strokes and BLS/BFA/EO skills.
  • Maintain certification level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Responsible for recertification before expiration of all certs.
  • This is an on-call YMCA Lifeguard Instructor and/or YMCA Swim Lesson Trainer who will teach certification course as needed at all aquatics branches. Must be willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
